Chairman of Acciaierie d’Italia. He is also Chairman of FB Group, the investment and financial advisory company of which he is a shareholder and Chairman of Techvisory, a company whose mission is the creation, production and marketing of solutions based on innovative algorithms with high technological value. Currently he is Honorary President of Fondazione La Quadriennale di Roma and President pro-bono of the Italian National Commission of UNESCO.
He has been at the top of important Italian and international companies including Eni and Telecom. Until January 2021 he was Chairman of Cellnex, the leading operator of wireless telecommunications and broadcasting infrastructure in Europe.
Until February 2019 he was Chairman of NEXI, Italian leader in payments, a company for which he contributed to an ambitious reorganization process sponsored by Advent International and Bain Capital.
Between 2007 and 2013 he was Chairman and CEO of Telecom Italia and Chairman of GSMA (the international organization of mobile network operators).
In 1983 he joined ENI, the Italian state-owned oil company where he became CEO in 1992. During his two terms at ENI, he led the profound transformation of the company, which was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1995.
He was Vice Chairman of Rothschild Europe, a member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Audit Committee of PetroChina for 14 years, a member of the Supervisory Board of TPG Post Group in the Netherlands and of the International Council of JP Morgan. He was also a member of the European Roundtable of Industrialists and the Executive Committee of Confindustria.
In 2011, he was appointed Cavaliere del Lavoro by the President of the Italian Republic.
